This Facebook post claiming that retired footballer Augustine Okocha, alias Jay Jay Okocha, has been appointed Nigeria’s Minister for Sports is FALSE.
The 12 July 2023-dated post has Okocha’s image accompanied by the text, “Former Super Eagles midfielder Jay Jay Okocha has been named new Minister for Sports in Nigeria. Way to go Nigeria President!!! Congratulations football legend.”
But, has Okocha been named Nigeria’s Sports Minister?
Incidentally, Nigerian President Bola Tinubu was yet to form a cabinet on 12 July 2023 when the claim was made.
Additionally, a statement by the Government of Nigeria on 16 August 2023 confirmed that former Cross River State Senator John Enoh is the new Minister for Sports Development. (Number 44 on the list)
The document indicated that Enoh and 44 other newly appointed ministers will be sworn in on 21 August 2023 at State House Conference Centre, Aso Villa, Abuja.
